Financial adviser Jill Hollander specializes in working with unmarried couples, which she says present some unique challenges.
"They're strangers in the eyes of the law," says Hollander, a principal at Financial Connections Group in Corte Madera, Calif. "That means that contract law, not family law, governs any disputes between them."
Many of Hollander's clients have their attorneys draw up living-together agreements covering topics ranging from how household accounts are kept to issues of death and heirs. While these pacts are often fairly comprehensive, they don't cover all the financial issues an unmarried couple may encounter.
That's where Hollander comes in.
