Leaving a career to buy a business has rewards, stumbles | Prairie Business Magazine

"HALLOCK, Minn. - After teaching for 17 years, Darcene Burgess traded kindergarten for a different kind of garden and took over the local greenhouse in Hallock, Minn.

“My husband, Chris, worked at a greenhouse for 12 years while he was in high school and college. He kind of gave me my love for gardening, and it’s just gone from there,” Burgess said.

In February, the couple began working at Wilson’s Greenhouse in Hallock, Minn., alongside former owners Greg and Sandy Wilson.

Although Chris Burgess has always loved gardening, Darcene Burgess said her love grew with time, leading her to the challenge of running a business.

Eric Giltner, business development specialist at the Small Business Administration in Grand Forks, said on average, Americans have seven different careers in their lifetime.

As people change their careers, they have to learn to overcome some obstacles, especially if they decide to run their own businesses.

According to Giltner, new entrepreneurs usually need help with at least one of five things: finance, time management, logistics, computer skills and marketing."
